To prove to herself and her squad that she has what it takes to be a detective, she'll have to solve the death of Tommi Peltonen. Nainen miesvaltaisessa työpaikassa. In this thrilling addition to the internationally successful Maria Kallio mystery series, the past and present of the beloved Finnish detective violently collide, leaving her future in grave danger. I was delighted to learn common endings of Finnish names - most ending in nin or nen.
Maria Kallio is an engaging character, with her insecurities and pet peeves about being a woman in a man's profession, I really wanted her to do well, even when she's making mistakes or being insecure about her talents. The police generally just seem to wander around randomly during the course of the plot. What they didn't know is that she fraternised with some of them during the proceedings! However the location was only one aspect of the book's vivid setting; the protagonist's longing for a greater acceptance of women in the police force certainly gives the novel a strong feeling of time - though a later one than I expected, sinc Strong sense of time and place, seriously flawed investigation I like Scandinavian crime novels and was pleased to have the opportunity to add add a Finnish author to my repertoire, especially as I could switch between reading and listening as it suited me. Anyhow, in this story, we have a female police detective who is trying to decide if she will stay with the police or go and finish law school. Writing in the first person is trickier to pull off, but in this case it worked for me.
I will continue reading the series, though, to see if the next book is more to my taste. As the story developed, I began to recognize not one plot, but several all residing in certain characters and groups of characters. Little Jimmy doesn't like to brush his teeth. As she struggles to balance her home life, run a department tainted by career-threatening allegations, and catch a killer, Maria is shocked to find just what someone was willing to do in the name of love. Or will it take some reading between the lines? I was excited to read a mystery taking place in Finland, because I spent some time there in the early 1990s, but I was a bit underwhelmed by this story.
Perfectly decent Scandinavian mystery with a police procedural bent. Worse, she knows and is somewhat involved with the other members of the choir. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable and competent read. In the end, identifying the killer was as difficult and tragic a process as I have ever read. The database provides the record of forthcoming books, books in-print, and books out-of-print.
She studied literature in Helsinki until 1995 and wrote crime novels from 1993 on. Crime and Fantasy in Scandinavia provides insight into the changing nature of civil society in Scandinavia through the lens of popular culture. Not a bad first attempt. Not in the same league with the great Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish mysteries, but. All in all, I was very disappointed in this book.
What should have been a quiet summer soon turns dramatic--and deadly. And, like several other reviewers, I was underwhelmed, at least at first. I don't think I want to test this theory. But even though Maria despises the small town and the acrid smell from its now-closed copper mine, when Arpikylä's sheriff asks her to serve as deputy sheriff for the summer, she agrees.
After solving her first murder and leaving the Helsinki Police Department behind, Maria Kallio thought that a move to the neighboring city of Espoo would signal a fresh start—a chance to not only put her new law degree to use, but to nurture her budding romance with Antti Sarkela. The death she is called to investigate includes people she knew: her old roommate's choir buddies, which makes it more difficult to investigate since she knows most of the suspects and doesn't want people she knows to be murderers. I didnt think I was going to like this book very much but after I finished it I really missed reading about the characters, the choir and others. This, the first book in the series, does not do it for me.
What should have been a quiet summer soon turns dramatic—and deadly. Perfect for kids studying English or Arabic as their second language. But beneath the choir's seemingly tight-knit bonds seethed bitter passion and jealousy. Maybe my expectations are off -- Finns speaking Finnish don't necessarily sound anything like Finns speaking English. I actually liked it even though it's written in the first person.
She has 4 or 5 more books that aren't translated and I suppose they'll come out soon. As the story developed, I began to recognize not one plot, but several all residing in certain characters and groups of characters. As the Finnish nights grow longer, so too does the list of suspects. I found the culture in the book interesting, I found the characters interesting, I found the whole book interesting. I read it in a day, and was absorbed while reading. Though she works as a legal counselor, Kallio soon finds herself unofficially investigating the murder, now labeled a sex crime.
